Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology in Conyers competed in and won the Southern Stingray Bowl, a regional academic competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl that was held at Savannah State University on March 1. The winning team is coached by Diana Kennen, and the team members are Sean Keeler, Michael Smith, Megan Symons and Arianna Gibbs.

Gary Martin Hayes and Adam Weart, co-founders of the Georgia based publishing company We Published That, have teamed up with 35 Marietta students to write a literary collection that focuses on how these young adults want to make a difference in the world. Profits are being donated to "Keep Georgia Safe," an organization devoted to provide safety education and crime prevention training.

Mimosa Elementary School had its first Peace Day on Feb. 21. It was planned and lead by art teacher Mollie Katzin and counselors Flynn Hoag and Dana Fountain and was designed to give students a learning opportunity centered around team building and community education.

The Atlanta Tipoff Club awarded the 2014 Naismith Award to area high school basketball players: Katie Amritt, Amanda Boyd, Malique Brunner, Taylor Gordon, Genesis Perrymond, Humberto Dryden, Jack Forrest, Adrian Price, Roger Rickman and Josh Selembo, who were each chosen based on how well they scored on their applications and an interview section. Each winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Congressman David Scott recently announced the 10 local students whose artwork was selected as the winning entries in the Thirteenth District’s 12th Annual Congressional Art Competition.
First:
Thaleena Chhoeurm, North Clayton High, took first place in the 13th District’s 12th annual Congressional Art Competion for “Look Into My Culture,” which will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year. The Art Institute of Atlanta provided a $5,000 scholarship for second place winner Mohammed Azeez of Pebblebrook High’s “Selfie” and a $2,500 scholarship for third place winner Natalie Dishmon-Caraballo of Stockbridge High’s “Long Neck.” Azeez’s art will hang in Congressman David Scott’s Washington Office for a year while Dishmon-Caraballo’s will hang in the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Armstrong Atlantic State University awarded Walton High School in Marietta with first place in the 2014 Georgia Science Bowl. The Westminister Schools in Atlanta came in second. The winning middle schools are Wesleyan School in Peachtree Corners with first place and Woodstock Middle School with second.
