Authorities are trying to figure out who tortured and shot to death two chocolate Labrador Retrievers in Carroll County, the Times-Georgian reports.

The dogs wandered away from their Bremen home while the owner was away hunting. They were found beaten and shot last Saturday, and one appeared to have been choked.

"We are working with the victim and Carroll County Animal Control, and hopefully, we can identify and locate the person responsible for this," Carroll County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Brad Robinson told the paper. "Someone has a sick mind to want to do harm to a harmless pet. We know that chocolate labs are not going to be normally vicious animals and I certainly don't think they were in this case."

Owner John Robinson and the Carroll County Humane Society are offering a $1,000 reward in the case.

John Robinson got the dogs as a Christmas present for his fiancee; Lexi was a 1 1/2-year-old female, Boss a 1-year-old male.

"Both very playful, wouldn't hurt a fly," John Robinson told the paper. "They would lick you to death."

A neighbor found the dead dogs and called him with the news.

On Wednesday, the American Kennel Club announced that the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the U.S. for the 20th straight year.
