Dropping temperatures, strong winds and snow flurries combined for a chilly Tuesday, and it’s going to get even colder.
Overnight temperatures are expected to dip into the teens for metro Atlanta before climbing into the upper 30s Wednesday afternoon, according to chief meteorologist Glenn Burns with Channel 2 Action News.
“As the cold air continues to push in, it’s pushing out snow flurries and showers,” Burns said Tuesday afternoon.
The windy weather makes it feel even colder, with gusts reported up to 45 mph. Still, it’s not as cold as the arctic blast three weeks ago, when temperatures remained below freezing for more than two days, Burns said.
Snow flurries were spotted across the northern metro counties and in north Georgia, where several mountain counties were under a wind chill advisory. But no significant accumulation is expected, forecasters said.
The windy conditions hampered efforts for firefighters battling a grass blaze in Athens, where several backyards were burned and homes were evacuated Tuesday afternoon.
The cold weather will continue Thursday and Friday, when overnight temperatures will likely again dip into the teens. The weekend will bring a slight warm-up, including high temperatures in the middle to upper 40s.
While the weather in Atlanta wasn’t affecting flights at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, a snowstorm pounding the Northeast was. Arrival flights were being delayed up to 30 minutes Tuesday afternoon at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.
Delta Air Lines and AirTran are allowing travelers booked on Tuesday and Wednesday flights to most Northeast airports to reschedule flights without a penalty.
