Thunderstorms headed east out of the metro Atlanta area Tuesday night, giving way to cloudy skies and temperatures dipping to the low- to mid-60s by daybreak Wednesday.

"Drier air rolls in tomorrow and the rest of the week," Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley said.

According to the Channel 2 Action News weather team, the next few days through the weekend will be mostly sunny and warmer, with highs climbing to 83 on Wednesday, the upper 80s on Thursday and around 90 on Friday.

It's quite a change from the blustery start of the week.

On Monday, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services reported three fires caused by lightning strikes.

The attic of a two-story home in the 1300 block of Chesapeake Drive in Lilburn was damaged, Gwinnett fire Capt. Eric Eberly said. The family was at home when the fire started, but no one was injured.

Lightning also sparked a fire at the Tree Corner Apartments in the 1500 block of Grayson Highway in Grayson, Eberly said. The fire was contained to the attic area on one side of the three-story building, but three apartments were significantly damaged by the blaze, he said. No injuries were reported.

A barn in the 2900 block of Bart Johnson Road in Buford was destroyed by fire after lightning struck a nearby tree, Eberly said. There were no injuries.

In Atlanta, authorities were called to the 2800 block of Cardo Drive because an adult and three children had gotten lost in the woods while looking for tadpoles when the severe storms moved in, police said.

They searched the woods, and Officer Bradley Irwin waded into a flooded creek to reach the children yelling for help. The officer suffered a laceration on his head while leading the adult and children out of the water, up a muddy hill and out of the woods to safety, police said.
