Temperatures were in the 30s across much of metro Atlanta early Thursday, but the chill will be short-lived, with morning lows returning to normal levels and afternoon highs reaching into the 80s by the weekend.

Readings at 6 a.m. Thursday ranged from 35 degrees in Cartersville, 36 in Alpharetta and 37 in Dunwoody to 45 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said lows Thursday night won't be as cold, bottoming out in the mid- to upper 40s in the suburbs and low 50s in town. Normal low for May 5 is 56 degrees.

Minton said temperatures Thursday afternoon should rebound from the chilly start and climb into the low 70s under sunny skies.

Those sunny conditions are expected to prevail at least through Monday, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid-70s on Friday, low 80s on Saturday and mid-80s Sunday and Monday.
