Widespread showers along with scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue across metro Atlanta through the day Tuesday as a cold front pushes east from the Mississippi Valley region.

The National Weather Service said the greatest chance for storms will be during the afternoon and early evening as the front approaches Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said that the rain should end Tuesday night, leaving mostly sunny skies the rest of the week.

Minton put the chance of rain Tuesday at 60 percent.

Afternoon highs should be in the mid-80s on Tuesday, upper 80s Wednesday and Thursday and mid-80s Friday and Saturday, Minton said. Overnight lows will be in the 60s.

At 8 a.m. Tuesday, Weather Service radar showed a large area of rain and thunderstorms moving eastward out of Arkansas into Mississippi, but no significant rain in Georgia.

Atlanta officially picked up .09 inch of rain on Monday, bringing the city’s total for 2012 to 17.95 inches, a deficit for the year of 4.02 inches.
