Atlanta-area grocery stores are open Tuesday, but some of the shelves may be picked clean.

The produce and bakery sections at Publix stores "are pretty sparse," spokeswoman Brenda Reid said. The company has not been able to get new shipments in since Sunday night.

Still, Reid said Publix was able to stock up on some items over the weekend, so some stores still have plenty of milk and bread, depending on how heavily they were shopped.

"It's really going to depend on each store," she said.

Publix stores in metro Atlanta will close at 4 p.m. Tuesday and plan to reopen at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Reid said.

At Kroger, advertising manager Lori Smith said stores saw "an enormous rush" on groceries over the weekend. Some trucks have been able to get through to restock, but most have not.

"It was hit or miss," she said.

Foot traffic is down from a normal Monday and Tuesday, Smith said, and perishable goods are low at many stores.

Kroger stores will keep normal hours Tuesday, and intend to Wednesday, weather permitting.

The rule of thumb may be “call before you go.”

Other retailers such as the CVS/pharmacy and Rite Aid stores  are open except in extreme cases. Atlanta-based Home Depot also recommends people call their store to ensure it is open before venturing out to shop – a few stores have been unable to open or changed their hours as roads began to ice over.

Walmart said most of its metro Atlanta stores reopened by 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Some Walmart stores are running low on eggs and milk, but company spokesman Daniel Morales said the stores are able to get trucks in, and are getting shipments.

He said the stores were "really well prepared" for the storm, both in terms of the products on the shelves and the stocking plans.

While some stores closed early Monday, Morales said that was primarily for the safety of associates and customers.

"We're really well positioned for this," he said. "We're making sure we're ready for customers."

Simon Malls -- with the exception of the Mall of Georgia -- remained closed Tuesday. The Mall of Georgia is open until 5 p.m., a spokeswoman said.

Northlake Mall is also closed Tuesday.

To be sure your shopping destination is open, call before heading over.
