Atlanta’s soggy start to the new year will continue overnight but end early Wednesday morning.
Light rain began to fall in Atlanta early Tuesday, dropping as much as half an inch in Cherokee and North Fulton by late afternoon, said Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley. Areas south of I-20 were much drier, while North Georgia got an inch or more of rain.
“By sunrise [Wednesday] the rain will be all gone,” said Chandley during his 5 p.m. broadcast.
No severe storms or flooding are expected overnight.
Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with mild temperatures. Highs are expected to be in the mid-50s, said Chandley.
Early Thursday temps will drop to the low 30s and the afternoon high will be in the low 50s.
Georgia needs the rain. The average annual rainfall is 49.71 inches but in 2012 only 37.03 inches fell, a deficit of 12.68 inches, said Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz early Tuesday.
Nitz said 2012 was an interesting year for weather, citing tornadoes that struck the state, including Cobb, March 2, and higher than normal temperatures.
Temperatures in March set a new average record in Atlanta: 64.5 degrees, 11.3 degrees above the monthly normal average temp.
On June 30, Atlanta set a new all-time record high of 106 degrees.
