A few snow flakes were floating around metro Atlanta after daybreak Friday, but forecasters were not predicting any travel problems from the flurries, which were expected to end by the afternoon.

Flurries were reported in Marietta, Austell, Alpharetta, Duluth and Doraville before 9 a.m., and weather radar showed a few snow showers drifting out of Alabama into northwest Georgia.

Temperatures were about 10 degrees colder than normal early Friday, but the winter weather advisory issued for the mountain counties was canceled shortly after 3 a.m. A wind advisory that had been posted for metro Atlanta also expired overnight.

A few school systems in the northwest corner of the state delayed the beginning of classes Friday as a precaution.

Temperatures were in the mid-20s across metro Atlanta before daybreak Friday, with wind chills in the mid- to upper teens.

The frigid weather rode into the state on brisk winds gusting up to 45 mph. Those winds brought down trees in some areas, and caused scattered power outages.

Georgia Power reported that about 9,300 customers lost electricity at some point Thursday and overnight. By early Friday, only about 400 customers – 300 in the Cartersville area – were still in the dark.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said highs on Friday will only reach the low 40s before heading back into the mid-20s overnight. Normal high for the date is 52, the normal low 34.

The weekend will be sunny and a little warmer, Minton said, with highs in the low 50s and lows in the low 30s.
