Authorities are investigating why a man who was nude when arrested by Atlanta police on Sunday died after he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Officers responding to a call of a naked man found the 51-year-old individual without clothes and acting erratically in a parking lot in the 400 block of Armour Drive in northeast Atlanta, police said. They did not identify him.

"It is my understanding uniformed officers felt the need to put him in custody for his own safety and others around," Atlanta police Maj. Keith Meadows told Channel 2 Action News.

The man needed unspecified medical attention, so police took him to Grady, where he died. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.

So far, homicide investigators have ruled out heat as a possible cause of death.

Police now are looking at video from the patrol car and statements from people at the scene to determine how officers arrested and transported the man, Channel 2 reports. At this point, nothing looks out of the ordinary.
