Atlanta police expect crowds of 724K people over Labor Day weekend

There are plenty of options for local sports fans during a busy Labor Day weekend in metro Atlanta.

The Atlanta Police Department is prepared for a Labor Day weekend that will draw at least 700,000 people and increased traffic, a Thursday press release said.

“The diversity of our events is an important part of what makes the City of Atlanta a unique, multifaceted destination,” Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields said in a statement. “We hope everyone has a great time and enjoys the best Atlanta has to offer. Our officers will be out among the crowds and stand ready to serve.”

APD wants everyone to consider taking MARTA, carpooling or ride-sharing; remove all valuables in plain sight in cars; leave laptops, smartphones, cash, tablet computers, purses and guns at home — or take the items with them.

“If you bring a firearm into the city, please make sure you can secure it in a gun safe or lock attached to a secured part of your vehicle that will also allow you to hide the firearm from view,” the press release said. “Your glove compartment and console are not appropriate locations to store guns and personal items as it takes seconds to pry the locks and take your valuables.”
