An Atlanta City Council panel has signed off on a resolution that would authorize an intergovernmental agreement with MARTA to use $2 million from the agency to make areas around transit stations accessible to handicapped persons.

The agreement would be the continuation of a prior, $7.6 million agreement signed in 2011 for curb ramp upgrades, pedestrian accessibility and safety improvements mandated under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

About 80 percent of the projects were completed before the earlier pact expired on Dec. 31, 2013. The rest were delayed by challenges to right of way acquisitions, staff told this week’s meeting of the Council’s Transportation Committee. The new agreement would aim to have the work completed by Dec. 31, 2018.

The city designs the projects, procures goods and services, manages contractors and inspects and accepts the work and its expenses are reimbursed by the transit agency. MARTA, in turn, is using federal funds obtained through the Atlanta Regional Commission.
