The city of Atlanta has awarded the department of public works’ office of fleet services the opportunity to improve its parts management operation through a new strategy developed by several employees.

Through a pilot process called Managed Competition, the city evaluates employees’ recommendations for improving operations and compares them to private sector proposals.

Sixteen employees with the office of fleet services worked on a proposal to manage fleet parts replacement and fulfillment in-house. Bids by private companies were also reviewed as part of the Managed Competition process.

City officials said the pilot will help it save about $3 million over the next five years.
