Atlanta police are looking for victims of a law enforcement impersonator who targeted the Hispanic community, authorities said Wednesday night.
An arrest has been made in the case, but police are asking additional victims to come forward.
A man told authorities that he was approached Jan. 31 in the Underground Atlanta area by someone he believed was an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. The suspect was wearing a badge and had a gun, according to the incident report.
The fake officer demanded that the victim give him $400 or he would be arrested for being in the country illegally, police said in a news release. The victim refused, then complied after the suspect tried to handcuff him. He obtained the money to give to the fake officer, who then frisked him and took more money from his pockets. The suspect provided a name and fraudulent case number before leaving, the report said.
The suspect’s name and photograph have not been released.
Police believe other victims may be afraid to contact them. Authorities are asking anyone who has been a victim of the scheme in Atlanta to call 404-658-7055 and ask for Investigator Charles B. Yacuone in reference to incident 14-033-1298. Spanish speakers can call Officer Antonio Gonzalez at 404-546-6831.
