This month the Atlanta Community Food Bank, together with the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks, will mobilize across all 50 states in an effort to bring an end to hunger. Hunger Action Month is designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of the fact that 41 million Americans, including nearly 13 million children, are food insecure, according to the USDA.

This year, the Hunger Action Month campaign will focus on the strong connections between hunger and health and will ask supporters to consider how it must feel to live with an empty stomach. In metro Atlanta and North Georgia, more than 750,000 people face hunger, and throughout the state of Georgia, one in five children don’t know where their next meal will come from each day.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank has several events planned, including a family volunteer day on Sept. 22. Volunteer time slots are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. at Atlanta Community Food Bank, 732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd., NW, Atlanta.

Volunteers will come together to inspect, sort and pack quality grocery donations. Shifts are 2.5 to 3 hours long. Participants will also learn all the different ways in which they can make a difference and take action toward ending hunger.
