Athens-Clarke County police continue to investigate a  shooting that left a Commerce soldier dead.

Officers responded at 10:45 p.m. Sunday to call of a person shot on Rolling Ridge Drive, where they found Jeremy Sean Buchanan, 19, with a gunshot wound, police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said.

She said Buchanan was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Buchanan was in the process of being discharged from the Army, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

Police told the newspaper they know what Buchanan was doing at the scene, but are not ready to release that information.

“We do have a reason for him being there, but we’re not ready to release that,” Athens-Clarke police Lt. David Leedahl told the Banner-Herald.

“This is a very active investigation, and we don’t want to spook the shooter by showing all our cards,” he said.

Investigators have not released a motive for the shooting. Crimestoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Sorrow asked that anyone with information on the incident call Sgt. Jerry Saulters at 706-613-3888, ext. 296 or Crimestoppers at 706-613-3342.
