An Athens man has been charged with impersonating an FBI agent.
A Clarke County grand jury this week indicted Charles Roger Gamble, who allegedly pretended to be an undercover drug agent during visits to an Athens convenience store last month, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.
Gamble wore a badge and carried a handgun — sometimes two guns, one in a shoulder holster and one on his hip — while visiting the store and telling clerks about his work, the Banner-Herald said.
The store’s owner reported Gamble to police after a clerk became suspicious that Gamble told him his real name while claiming to be an undercover agent.
Clarke County sheriff’s deputies arrested Gamble on March 16 on a charge of impersonating a police officer. He was released from bail on $5,000 bond.
The grand jury charged Gamble with three counts of of impersonating an officer between March 1 and March 14, the Banner-Herald said.
