Athens-Clarke County Police quickly arrested a man accused of pulling a stolen gun on a woman while she was walking early Saturday and attempting to sexually assault her.

Police say the 27-year-old woman was walking on Hill Street shortly after 2 a.m. and neared Pope Street when a man following her, later identified as suspect Darien Orese Crawford, forced her to the ground. He pointed a pistol at her and began trying to remove her clothing, police say.

After a struggle, Crawford allegedly fled after people began approaching the scene. Before leaving, however, police say he grabbed the woman’s purse. The suspect was caught two blocks away, where an officer found him with a gun and the woman’s purse.

Crawford, 43, of Mandy Drive, was charged with armed robbery, sexual battery, aggravated assault and theft by receiving stolen property. The gun had been stolen the day before from a vehicle, police said.

The woman in the assault sustained minor injuries, police said.
