Citing a recent increase in the number of motor vehicles seen where they shouldn’t be in and around Allatoona Lake, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reminds the public that it’s illegal to venture off designated roadways on Corps land.

Allatoona Lake, a man-make lake in Cherokee and Bartow counties, is lowered every winter as a flood-control measure. Apparently, the temptation to drive out on the dry lake bed is too much for some to resist.

But the penalty for doing so is a fine of up to $5,000 per violation or up to six months in prison, or both, the Corps says in a Facebook posting. Also, violators' vehicles are subject to towing and impoundment fees. The prohibition applies to cars, trucks, motorcycles, mini-bikes and all-terrain vehicles.

"To avoid the destruction of public lands, we encourage the public to operate vehicles off road on your own private land or facilities designated for motor vehicle use," the Corps says. Information: https://bit.ly/2RdRi45
