Alpharetta to seek resident input on glass recycling

With waste haulers warning they’ll no longer accept glass for recycling – and that any jars, bottles or other glass products put out with a homeowners’ recyclables will contaminate the whole load and consign it to a landfill – Alpharetta will soon survey residents on what they want done.
In the meantime, said Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard, “in April, we will begin instructing residents to stop placing glass in their recycling bins.”
Should residents just put glass in the regular trash? Drop off glass at a collection center to be set up at the Public Works Department on Hembree Road? Or continue curbside glass recycling, which would entail using a third waste bin, a $3 per month increase in one’s waste bill and more trash-hauling trucks on the street?
A link to an online survey will be included in Alpharetta’s upcoming residential waste bills and on hang tags to be placed on residential recycling bins the week of March 6. Survey results will be presented to the City Council in April, when it will decide how glass waste will be handled.
