Alpharetta OKs floodplain study

Alpharetta officials approved $145,000 in funding Tuesday to update the city's floodplain map.

City engineers pointed out that the new study would update information from the last map drawn 12 years ago. Over time, they said, water flow and drainage patterns can change dramatically due to environmental changes, land use and other forces.

The proposed project will comply with the latest Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District Watershed Management Plan and coincides with a project coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
City officials said the new maps will include the best-known data throughout the city and will be more expansive than those drawn up in the FEMA and DNR studies. Those agencies will study only areas around larger rivers and streams, which in Alpharetta is limited to Big Creek

The proposed project will also consider areas near smaller streams and tributaries

Half of the total cost will be taken from funds available in the city's Floodplain Studies account. The other half will come from funds available in the Drainage Maintenance account.
