Two alleged gang members have been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting that injured an 8-year-old in Norcross.

Jonathan Augustine Yanez-Gomez, 18, and Kevin Ortiz, 17, (listed as Kevin Corrales in jail records) have been charged with aggravated assault. Both Lawrenceville residents are believed to be members of the Surenos/Sur 13 gang, Norcross police said.

Yanez-Gomez, Ortiz, Ricardo Vidal and Ruben Herrera have all been charged in connection with the May 20 drive-by shooting, which police believe was random. All are being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

The child who was shot in the leg is out of the hospital and recovering.

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
