Decatur updated its 2010 Livable Center Initiative Plan to include a recommendation supporting “efforts to include affordable housing [in Decatur’s commercial districts].” Affordable housing has always been “a component of our master plan, but this [amendment] gives it formal clarity,” said Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne.

A proposed joint partnership between the city, MARTA and Columbia Ventures will be the first Decatur development to include affordable housing. Construction probably won’t begin until late next year at the earliest, but initial plans call for 600 apartments, with phase one including rental units for senior citizens.
