Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood and the Board of Aldermen will hold public hearings to decide whether to increase property taxes. They tentatively have adopted a millage rate that will require an increase in property taxes by 7.95 percent.

The proposed annual tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $175,000 would be around $39.20 and for nonhomestead property with a fair market value of $300,000 would be about $67.20 annually.

Residents are invited to the public hearings at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. July 13 and 6:55 p.m. July 20 in the Council Chambers, Acworth City Hall, 4415 Senator Russell Ave., Acworth.

Then the millage rate will be adopted at 7 p.m. July 20, following the public hearing.

This tentative increase will result in a rate of 7.6 mills, an increase of 0.56 mills. Without this increase, the millage rate will be no more than 7.04 mills. However, the city has had a 7.6 millage rate since 2012.
