About 120 cats have been found in a residence in Canton, several of them in poor health, Cherokee County marshal’s officials said Saturday afternoon.

Officials responded to a call about a large number of cats in a residence in the 4300 block of East Cherokee Drive, marshal’s spokeswoman Major Karen Johnson said.

Police initially went out Friday night, but responding officers couldn’t get anyone to answer the door, Johnson said. Officers went again Saturday, and when the homeowners answered, officers were overcome by the smell and called for assistance.

The homeowners were cooperating with officers and have surrendered the animals, Johnson said. Animal control officers are in the process of removing the cats, some of which are pregnant. Also, two dogs were found in the residence.

No charges have been filed.

A teen in the home has been placed somewhere else by officials with the state Division of Family and Children Services, Johnson said. However, the teen is not actually in DFCS custody.
