Gwinnett County goes to the polls today in a slew of local, state and federal elections. Polls close at 7 p.m. Here’s what to watch as tonight’s results roll in:
*Gwinnett County residents could elect the first Latina to the Georgia General Assembly in House District 99. Attorney Brenda Lopez faces Jaime "Jay" Trevari in the Democratic primary for the Norcross-area district. No Republican is running in the district. You can get more information on the race here.
*Five Republican state representatives who represent parts of Gwinnett County are being challenged in their own party primary today. Among them: state Rep. Joyce Chandler, R-Grayson, who faces fellow Republican David Crocker in House District 105. Two Democrats, Donna McLeod and Perry Green, also are competing to advance to the November General Election.
Chandler's Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives have contributed at least $36,500 to her re-election campaign in recent weeks. If Chandler wins tonight, it would be a victory for the state's Republican establishment. You can learn more about the District 105 race here.
*Former Republican state Rep. Clay Cox is seeking to recapture his old seat in the race for House District 108. He faces Patty Gabilondo in the Republican primary for the Lilburn-area district. Cox touts his experience, while Gabilondo says the General Assembly needs new ideas. Democrat Tokhir Radjabov is running unopposed in the district. You can learn more about the race here.
*None of the three incumbent Gwinnett County commissioners on today's ballot faces a primary challenge, but two will face Democrats in the November general election (a third initially faced a challenger who later dropped out). A Democrat hasn't served on the county commission in 30 years, but some think the party's fortunes are changing.
*Longtime Sheriff Butch Conway faces a primary challenge from former deputy Keith Van Nus in today's Republican primary. No Democrat is running. You can learn more here.
*Gwinnett residents also will play a key role in today's races for U.S. Senate and Congress. You can learn more about those and other Metro Atlanta races here.
