Voters on Tuesday approved two referendums giving the city of Atlanta and MARTA permission to raise taxes to upgrade roads and expand the rail and bus system.
The two measures, one for a half penny increase sales tax increase for MARTA and a four-tenths of a penny increase for Atlanta transportation improvements, won with large leads with almost all of the vote counted, according to election results shortly after midnight.
Voting at Morningside Baptist Church on Tuesday morning, Chris Coad, 37, of Atlanta, said he supported both ballot questions as a regular MARTA rider he sees expanding the bus and subway system and improving transportation in the city as a long-term investment.
“If we are going to be a world-class city, we have to find ways to move people around the city,” he said.
