The U.S. Department of Transportation passed over Cobb County for a $10 million federal grant that would have helped make improvements to U.S. 41, including dedicated bus-only lanes and technology that would allow bus drivers to control stop lights.

Critics said those improvements were tied to the county’s controversial plan for bus rapid transit — a claim county officials deny.

The federal transportation agency awarded some $500 million in grants nationwide, but none went to Georgia communities applying for the money. Atlanta's application for Streetcar funding was also rejected.
