Josh Belinfante, the vice chairman of the state ethics commission, resigned this week as he considers a run for the state Senate.
Belinfante told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he has yet to decide if he will be a candidate for the newly redrawn District 6 seat, but that he is "very interested in the district."
The seat, now held by Democrat Doug Stoner of Smyrna, was redrawn in a Senate plan this week from being wholly in Cobb County to including a large chunk of GOP-dominated north Fulton County. Belinfante is one of several Republicans considering a bid for the seat should its proposed configuration be finalized.
"I've been encouraged by the calls that I've been getting since the maps came out and wanted to reach out on my own but wanted to make sure there was no issue with me continuing to serve on the commission," Belinfante said.
An appointee of former Gov. Sonny Perdue, Belinfante is an attorney with RobbinsFreed in Atlanta. His resignation comes as the commission is about to name a new executive director and undergo substantial reorganization, much of which Belinfante himself designed.
A spokesman for Gov. Nathan Deal said Belinfante's successor will be named Monday.
