Commission puts brakes on new zoning near Gwinnett Place Mall
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Tuesday tabled a proposal to allow high-rise development near the Gwinnett Place Mall.
The proposal would allow developments of up to 25 stories in an area bounded by Pleasant Hill Road to the east, I-85 to the south, Steve Reynolds Boulevard to the west and Satellite Boulevard to the north. Supporters say the move would encourage urban-style development that could help remake the suburban shopping district.
The zoning proposal would encourage developers to include amenities like multi-use paths and pedestrian boulevards. The Gwinnett Planning Commission gave the proposal its unanimous approval earlier this month.
County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash recently told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that commissioners want to make some changes to the proposal. But she said the county is committed to remaking the Gwinnett Place area with transit improvements and a pedestrian connection to nearby McDaniel Farm Park.
As for redeveloping the mall itself, Nash said Gwinnett officials “are encouraged with conversations with existing property owners over there.”
