A runoff election will be held July 14 in Clayton County to fill the District 9 school board seat vacated by Charlton Bivins in January. Bivins resigned the post because he had relocated from the Morrow-area district to another part of Clayton.
Low voter turnout last month prompted a runoff between Candice Jackson and Benjamin Straker Sr. Only 279 out of 14,000 potential voters in that district cast votes in the June 16 special election.
Straker is a resident of Rex and the father of three children. He owns Integrity Senior Insurance Services.
“Being a parent in the district I’m running for, there needs to be someone with outreach experience, someone who can get the community involved in the school system again,” Straker said.
Jackson lives in Ellenwood and has two children. She works for the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia. She also is a board-certified counselor and owner of Jackson and Associates Consulting.
“I have a vested interest in Clayton County,” Jackson said. “I’ve lived in this district for 27 years. I’m a homeowner and I have a passion for education.”
The July 14 run-off will be held at local polling locations in District 9 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
