Do you want check on what U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss is doing? He's got an app for that.

The Republican from Georgia announced on Wednesday the release of a mobile application for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that will allow users to call his offices directly, research his position on hot topics, and access articles, newsletters and multimedia on the senator.

This is the first mobile application offered by a U.S. senator and is available for free on the iPhone App Store. Other congressional representatives across the country have apps available.

Lauren Claffley, Chambliss’ press secretary, said the app will allow users to interact with the senator’s office in a way more in tune with a fast-paced digital age.

“We are always looking for better ways and exploring new avenues to connect with constituents,” she said.

In a YouTube video released Wednesday to promote the app, Chambliss said this is another way for “on-the-go” Georgians to keep tabs on his work in Washington.

“This way, folks don’t have to sit down and stop what they’re doing in order to find out what I’ve been up to or how to contact me,” he said in the video.

Claffey said the office collected data from several reports, including a 2010 Nielsen Co. report, “The State of Mobile Apps,” that illustrated trends among smartphone users. She said the office found that Apple users downloaded more apps than other smartphone users, making Apple a prime choice.

She said the senator’s office would not rule out expanding to other types of phones, but it has no specific plans at the moment.

“This is just version 1.0, so you can expect that once we get some feedback, we’ll be making changes to make the app even better,” she said.
