Dexter White, the deputy commissioner of Atlanta’s Department of Public Works, has died, city officials announced Monday.

White, 51, joined the city of Atlanta’s government in August 2010 and served as the interim head of the Department of Watershed Management until April 2011. White, who previously worked in local government in Richmond, Va., was married with two children.

Carlos Campos, a spokesman for Mayor Kasim Reed, said White is believed to have died in his sleep.

City officials plan to release more information about his service soon.
