On Jan. 15, 1908, a group of 16 women at Howard University did something that had never been done before – form a black Greek letter sorority. The founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. wanted to create a support system for women with like minds to come together for mutual uplift, and to harness their talents and strengths for the benefit of others. Today, more than 100 years later, the group that started with 16 college women is now a global sorority with nearly 300,000 members, who excel in all areas from politics to business to science to education. One of the initiates pictured above (top row, second Ivy) in the Spring 1951 Ivy Leaf Club at Howard University, went on to become a major television star in the 1970s and the mothers of one of the top rockers of his generation.....
