Atlanta's rapid growth has been cause for much discussion in recent years. And justifiably, the city has consistently ranked among the fastest-growing large cities.

While the city has seen rapid growth in population and development, it may not be able to claim it’s “booming.” At least according to a new report.

The tech website SmartAsset, ranked Atlanta No. 28 on its "Top Boomtowns in America" list.

The site said that “boomtowns” are “characterized by prosperity and robust development, are often desirable places to put down roots and take out a mortgage.”

To determine the rankings, SmartAsset compared data from 500 of the largest cities nationwide on categories such as: population change, unemployment rate, change in unemployment rate, GDP growth rate, business growth, housing growth and change in household income.

"Economic growth provides employment opportunities and draws new residents. Some places, however, are growing faster than others," the report's authors write.

Here's how Atlanta ranked, according to the report:
Overall rank: No. 28
Five-year population change: 9.2%
Average yearly GDP growth: 3%
Five year change in number of establishments: 5.9%
Five year housing growth rate: 8.3%
Index: 83.01

The top 10 boomtowns in America, according to the report:
Longmont, Colorado
Denton, Texas
Mount Pleasant, South Carolina
Miami
Greeley, Colorado
New Braunfels, Texas
Denver
Charleston, South Carolina
North Charleston, South Carolina
Round Rock, Texas

Other findings include:

  • Colorado, Texas and South Carolina dominated the top spots on the list for boomtowns
  • Midwestern and Northeastern cities did not crack the top 50 spots on the list
