As House Democrats’ impeachment push against President Donald Trump dominates national political headlines, a Georgia woman’s petition to turn the tables on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is gaining steam.

Almost 300,000 people have signed Marjorie Taylor Greene’s petition to impeach Pelosi, whose Democratic leadership is charging Trump with two counts of high crimes and misdemeanors.

On Friday, the House Judiciary Committee passed two articles of impeachment strictly along party lines. A full impeachment vote in the House will likely come before Christmas.

House Democrats are drafting impeachment articles against President Trump. Speaker Nancy Pelosi made the announcement Dec. 5, 2019. The announcement came after hours-long testimony on Dec. 4, 2019, from four legal scholars on whether the president has committed impeachable offenses. Democrats could schedule an impeachment vote before the end of 2019. If adopted, President Trump will face a trial in the U.S. Senate in a presidential election year. The Senate is controlled by the GOP.

Greene had been running for Congress in metro Atlanta’s 6th Congressional District, a seat held by U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath, who upset GOP incumbent Karen Handel in 2018. McBath was one of the 23 Democrat House Judiciary Committee members who voted for Trump’s impeachment articles Friday.

However, on Friday, Greene moved her candidacy to the neighboring 14th District, a seat being vacated by Republican Tom Graves, who abruptly announced his retirement last week.

U.S. House Democrats have drafted two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. House leaders are charging the president with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. They announced the articles of impeachment on Dec. 10, 2019. A full House impeachment vote could come before Christmas. If passed, the president would face a Senate trial in 2020, a presidential election year.

The 14th District in northwest Georgia is considered more conservative than the 6th District, which includes a small swath of DeKalb County and stretches into east Cobb.

Greene launched her petition in January. As of Dec. 13, the petition, titled "Impeach Nancy Pelosi for crimes of treason," has more than 290,000 signatures.

The petition accuses Pelosi of voting for aid to “illegal aliens ... that invade our country with drugs, human trafficking, and terrorist causing death and crime to American citizens;” refusing “to protect American people by refusing to fund our border wall, leaving our borders open and unsafe;” and travelling to Hawaii and Puerto Rico while the federal government was partially shut down earlier this year.

Greene delivered a copy of the petition to Pelosi’s office earlier this year.
