Georgia regents meeting, colleges cancelled due to weather
The University System of Georgia Board of Regents meeting this week has been cancelled due to expected inclement weather.
Classes at Emory, Kennesaw State, Georgia State and Southern Polytechnic State universities, Georgia Tech and Agnes Scott College were also cancelled Tuesday. The University of North Georgia closed all of its campuses on Tuesday and Wednesday. Other institutions were monitoring the weather to determine whether any additional delays or closings would be necessary.
The regents were scheduled to meet Tuesday and Wednesday in Atlanta. The meeting will be rescheduled later this month.
The board was set to vote on a tobacco ban for the 31 schools in the university system. The ban, which would include electronic cigarettes, would be enforced by institution presidents.
The regents were also expected to vote on changes to its policies for awarding out-of-state tuition waivers. A state audit completed in December found that the system lacked clear guidelines and reliable data. Those findings raised concerns among some state lawmakers who want tuition dollars to be spent on Georgia students instead of those outside the state.
