1965: On March 7, 1965, John Lewis, seen here being attacked by an Alabama state trooper, was among hundreds of marchers attacked by state troopers and sheriff deputies as they descended the bridge. At the time, Lewis was a leader of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee, and along with Hosea Williams, had led the marchers across the bridge in what was intended to be a march from Selma to Montgomery. Lewis, who suffered a skull fracture, was among more than 50 marchers who were hospitalized after the attack. The Bloody Sunday attack became a turning point in the civil rights movement, and has inspired pilgrimages to Selma each March 7 to commemorate the event and to draw attention to voting rights. 1975: On the ten-year anniversary of Bloody Sunday, Coretta Scott King marched over the bridge while flanked by Father James Robinson and Lewis. The crowd that year was estimated at 5,000. In 1975, Lewis was the director of the Voter Education Project, and was years away from beginning his political career. (AP file)
