Gainesville announced Tuesday that interim police Chief Carol Martin is the sole finalist for the top job.

City Manager Kip Padgett credited Martin’s implementation of the records management system, departmental hiring and her experience — she is a major — with making her an “excellent candidate” to become the permanent chief.

She joined the Gainesville Police Department in January 1987 as a patrol officer. In 1997, the Gainesville Elks Lodge named her “Police Officer of the Year.” Gainesville Kiwanis Club awarded her the “John W. Jacobs, Sr. Memorial Award” for excellence in law enforcement in 2003 and 2007, Padgett said.

The Gainesville Human Resources Department received 16 applications for the position, Padgett said.
