There is plenty of rain moving into Georgia on Friday morning, but it is concentrated in the lower half of the state.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said a frontal boundary to the south of Atlanta is the focal point for most of the rain activity. Areas along and south of I-20 are getting drenched for the morning commute, while it is drier for neighborhoods on the Northside.

“The good news is it’s going to be wrapping up a little bit later on today,” Deon said. “And as we head into the weekend, we’re going to see some sunshine returning. We’re talking full sunshine on Saturday.”

After a 60% chance of morning showers clears up, she said a different kind of weather front and some high pressure will help North Georgia to see the sky again. Deon expects sunshine will still be limited Friday afternoon, but a clear sky overnight will set the region up for a great start to the weekend.

Sunshine should return to North Georgia on Saturday, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The clear conditions will also allow temperatures to fall. Atlanta is headed for a high of 56 degrees Friday afternoon and will drop to about 34 degrees Saturday morning, according to Channel 2.

“Then we’re warming back up to the upper 50s to close to 60 degrees on Saturday in some spots underneath all that sunshine,” Deon said.

The weekend won’t be all sunny. Rain returns to the forecast Sunday, but Deon said it should hold off until later in the evening. She is calling for a 30% chance of rain the second half of the day.

While the rain persists Friday morning, Deon said drivers should be extra careful on the roads.

“You want to factor in some extra time, because we’re not only dealing with the rain, we’re also dealing with some foggy spots and that’s bringing visibility down,” she said.

The wet pavement has already contributed to traffic trouble. A rollover crash temporarily blocked all northbound lanes of the Downtown Connector at Edgewood Avenue at 6 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The crash has since cleared, but delays remain.

“As a result, traffic is jammed back to Georgia State Stadium,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said. “Unusual delays early on the Downtown Connector.”

The southbound ride is not impacted, he said.

Arum said there is some good news for the ride in from the southern suburbs.

“Despite the rain we’ve been dealing with all morning long, no big backups and no issues on I-75 North out of Henry and Clayton counties, and I-85 North looks good out of Newnan,” he said.
