Showers will move through metro Atlanta this afternoon, kicking off of a string of wet days that is expected to last into next week.
While Friday morning is starting off dry, it might be best to keep that umbrella handy. The rain is expected to begin sometime after lunch, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
Those showers will be mostly scattered before the rain starts to pick up this afternoon and evening.
“The last few nights, storms have developed right around sunset,” Monahan said. “We’ll likely see another round of that as we head through this evening.”
The good news, he said, is that the next several days won’t be nearly as hot.
“You’ve made it through the end of the week and you’ve made it through the highest heat,” Monahan said. “The heat’s going to start to ease up a little bit here over the next couple of days.”
Temperatures are starting off in the mid-70s and should reach a high of about 92 degrees in Atlanta, according to the latest forecast.
The rain is expected to clear up overnight and into Saturday morning, but more widespread showers will return in the afternoon, putting a damper on those outdoor weekend plans.

Saturday’s chance of rain is about 60%, but that drops to 40% for the second half of the weekend, according to the latest forecast. Unfortunately, those afternoon showers are expected to stick around through at least Tuesday.
As for traffic, an earlier crash on I-285 blocked two right lanes at Northlake Parkway in DeKalb County, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported.
The wreck is causing minor delays, but traffic appeared to be moving just before 6 a.m.
