The 10th annual Let’s Move DeKalb back-to-school event will take place this weekend, allowing parents in need to get free backpacks and school supplies.
DeKalb Commissioner Larry Johnson and C.H.O.I.C.E.S., an organization targeting child obesity, will host the event Saturday at The Gallery of South DeKalb Mall, according to a news release. Due to COVID-19, the backpacks will be handed out to families via a drive-thru in the mall’s parking lot at 2801 Candler Road. The parking lot is accessible from Flat Shoals Road.
The county has 750 backpacks to give away, which will be stuffed with healthy snacks and face masks. Boxes of fresh produce and groceries are also available for families in need, but supplies are limited.
DeKalb County Schools are currently only offering virtual learning, but school leaders are discussing plans to return to classrooms sometime in October. However, those plans have not been finalized.
Parents of children in pre-K to high school are eligible, and they must register in advance at letsmovedekalb2020.eventbrite.com. The supplies will be distributed between 10 a.m. and noon.
