A South Florida officer is recovering after police say he accidentally shot himself while responding to a home early Friday.

Police say the Davie officer was trying to shoot a dog that charged at him −and shot himself in the hand instead. The incident happened at a home on Southwest 116th Way, according to Local 10. The dog was grazed by the bullet and is expected to be OK, said Lt. Mark Leone.

While the officer was trying to shoot the dog, he instinctively put his and out to protect himself, Leone said. The bullet hit his hand.

Another officer helped him tie a belt around his arm to stop the bleeding, The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment. The injuries weren't considered life threatening.

Leone said the dog, a female boxer, was grazed by the bullet and is expected to be OK.

As for the officer, he's recovering from non-life threatening injuries. Leone said the officer was handling a "non-criminal incident" but did not disclose any additional details.
