A Cessna civilian aircraft was escorted from restricted airspace “without incident” after it was intercepted by an F-16 fighter jet Tuesday near the U.N. General Assembly, according to multiple reports.
President Joe Biden was in the area after giving his first address to the U.N. on Tuesday morning.
The Cessna 182 was flown by an Army instructor pilot who was conducting a cadet flight lab, according to reporter Pete Muntean. The plane is owned by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Muntean reported.
The single-engine Cessna landed safely after violating the restricted area above New York, according to reporter Mary Walsh.
U.S. Northern Command said it appeared to be a simple mistake by the pilot, and there was no malicious intent.
World leaders have gathered in the New York area and are meeting at the United Nations this week.
