A metro Atlanta tax preparer has been sentenced to more than a year in federal prison for under-reporting personal earning on her personal tax returns.

Amberula Levitt, 45, who owned several Tax Time Tax Service locations throughout the metro area, was sentenced to 21 months and ordered to pay the Internal Revenue service $620,000, about the same amount she owes in back taxes, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

“Individuals in the business of preparing tax returns for others should set an example of tax compliance,” Yates said. “Instead, Levitt used her knowledge and skills of the tax system defraud it. For that, she will be punished.”

According to the release, Levitt, of East Point, intentionally falsified her income between 2004 and 2009 and pleaded guilty to two counts of filing false tax returns in October. In addition to her prison sentence, Levitt will also have to serve one year of supervised release and complete 100 hours of community service.
