The feisty country music trio The Dixie Chicks have returned with a smoldering track called “Gaslighter” after a 14-year break from studio music.
The group released the song and a video Wednesday, ahead of the release of its album. The song’s title speaks to the newly coined term gaslighting, which means psychologically manipulating an individual into questioning their thoughts or psyche.
A passage from the song speaks to the gaslighting theme:
Gaslight, big timer
Repeating all of the mistakes of your father
Gaslighter, you broke me
You're sorry, but where's my apology?
Gaslighter, you liar"
According to USA Today, the “Wide Open Spaces” singers will release a new album, with the same name, featuring the new single May 1. The album is co-produced by Jack Antonoff, who has had success with Taylor Swift, “Lover,” and Lana Del Rey, “Norman F------ Rockwell!"

The group shot to the top of the charts in the 1990s and early 2000s. The crew won 13 Grammys in their heyday. Songs including “Goodbye Earl” and “Long Time Gone” solidified their status as more than country stars but pop divas. Their tours and albums were wildly successful, but their career halted when lead singer Natalie Maines spoke out against former President George W. Bush in 2003.
The group continued to tour, making a stop in metro Atlanta during its 2016 summer tour.
Most recently, they joined Swift on her song “Soon You’ll Get Better,” a track off her album “Lover.”
