Florida State Attorney R.J. Larizza will seek the death penalty against the suspect accused of shooting a Daytona Beach police officer, according to reporter Nicole Griffin.

Officer Jason Raynor, who was shot in June, died Tuesday, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young released a statement about the 26-year-old officer:

“The outpouring of love and support that all of you have shown to our police department and to Officer Raynor’s family since he was severely injured has been nothing short of amazing. In His infinite wisdom God decided that it was time for this courageous young man to guard the gates of Heaven, even though that wasn’t the outcome that we all hoped for.”

Othal Wallace, the suspected shooter, eventually was captured near Atlanta in a treehouse after a nationwide manhunt.

Raynor was shot June 23 after he responded to a suspicious incident near Kingston Avenue in Daytona Beach. A short time later, the officer’s radio communication went silent, officers said.
