A woman and two pets were found dead Saturday morning after a residential fire in Gwinnett County, authorities said.

Officials said a resident of the home along Tumble Wood Trail woke up around 6:15 a.m. to the smell of smoke. The person quickly found out the house had gone up in flames and called 911.

Firefighters responded within minutes and were informed by bystanders that a victim remained inside. Crews deployed hoses into the house, but visibility remained low as they entered.

Search teams located a woman in a bathroom and two family pets in the house, according to the fire department. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman’s body was turned over to the county’s medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death. Her name was not released.

Three other residents were displaced due to the blaze. The fire was determined to have been accidental, but officials did not say where or how it originated.

“This incident is a tragic reminder of the importance of practicing home fire safety. Firefighters encourage residents to develop a home fire escape plan, practice fire drills regularly, install and maintain working smoke alarms, and look for and eliminate hazards that could cause a fire to start or grow in intensity,” authorities said.
