Georgia voters headed to the polls Tuesday will need to prepare for all kinds of weather, but not widespread rain.

Fog, sunshine and scattered downpours are all in Tuesday’s forecast for metro Atlanta, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. With a 40% chance of rain this afternoon, Monahan said earlier is better Tuesday for voting in the primary election.

“When polls open at 7 a.m., most of us are just dealing with fog, some low clouds,” Monahan said. “None of that heavy rain we saw yesterday, and there’s going to be some sunshine, too, for this primary election day in Georgia.”

Monahan is calling for about seven hours of sunshine once the clouds burn off Tuesday morning. After Monday morning’s heavy rain and storms, a light breeze and high humidity have stuck around and are contributing foggy conditions on the roads.

Visibility dropped below a mile in the northeast Georgia mountains, where the National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement on patchy dense fog. Until the fog lifts at about 10 a.m., the Weather Service is advising motorists to slow down, use low-beam headlights and leave extra distance.

“We start out with just clouds and fog this morning but into the heating of the day, we will get some sunshine and we’ll see some isolated storms develop,” Monahan said. “That becomes a little more scattered as we approach sunset tonight.”

Monahan is not expecting widespread rain coverage, but he said any storms that develop Tuesday afternoon have the potential to be strong. The next couple of days will not be especially wet, according to the latest forecast.

“Some scattered showers and storms, but plenty of dry hours too,” he said. “Thursday is a different story. We might start out with some hints and breaks of sunshine, but quickly clouding up, and then Thursday afternoon we’re going to have some heavy rain and storms again, a lot like we saw (Monday) morning.”

On Thursday, Monahan is not expecting much sunshine as rain chances jump to 90%. North Georgia won’t have to wait too long for the return of sunny weather, as conditions should be much improved for Memorial Day weekend.

“Your weekend looks great,” Monahan said. “Clearing out for Saturday. Sunday, mid-80s with sunshine.”

Tuesday's projected high is 83 degrees with a 30% chance of an afternoon shower or storm.
