A tractor-trailer fire on I-75 South near Acworth and the ensuing cleanup caused significant traffic delays early Friday morning in Cherokee County.

The incident began shortly after midnight near Ga. 92, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The fire completely shut down I-75 South for hours, according to the Cherokee sheriff’s office. The fire was extinguished around 2:30 a.m. and one lane was reopened shortly after. One right lane remained closed into the morning commute.

No injuries were reported, the sheriff’s office said.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
